First Pitch Case Competition

First Pitch is an MBA style case competition designed to provide graduate students with a fun, dynamic, and competitive learning experience to gain exposure to sports business issues.

The 2022 competition’s case was provided by our sponsor, SponsorPulse™, and judged by a panel of esteemed professionals across the sports industry. Three finalists were selected to present at SSAC.

2022 Rules:

Teams must consist of up to three current students from the same graduate program. All team members must be registered and have paid for the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference (SSAC) at the time of registering for First Pitch. There will be no additional fee to participate in First Pitch.

Contestants should leverage SponsorPulse to address the case; access will be provided after registration closes. Students may use any research tools or data available to them, if necessary, as well. Teams may use supporting external data in their presentations (citations required). However, all main ideas must be the unique ideas of only the team members involved. 

Plagiarism will result in disqualification. Team members may not consult with any other individuals (including other students, other teams, or experts in the field). Legal PEDs (e.g., coffee, soda, and other caffeinated beverages) are permitted.

2022 Logistics:

The competition will occur in two rounds. In the first round each team will submit a PowerPoint presentation in both PowerPoint and PDF format. The presentation may not exceed 15 slides including introduction, conclusion, and appendices.

Our panel of judges will select three teams to participate in the final round during the 2022 MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston. In the final round teams will present their presentations live to the judges and prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

The Sloan Sports Analytics Conference Mentorship Program is focused on women and black undergraduate students, graduate students, and those early in their career with interest in a sports career. The Sloan Sports Analytics Conference is committed to elevating and broadening diversity in sports.

Program Details

  • One ticket to attend the 17th Sloan Sports Analytics Conference
  • Mentorship pairing with a senior professional in the sports industry for 6 months
  • Networking opportunities with other mentees and mentors, career advice panels, and skill-building workshops through in-person/virtual programming
  • Applicants were selected based on their demonstrated interest in the sports industry from their responses to the short answer question in the online application

Career Board & Resume Book Terms of Service

The MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference offers the job posting platform and resume database only and makes no recommendations or endorsements regarding potential employers, employees, or job postings. Conference organizers are not in a position to review the merits of potential employers, employees, or job postings. All hiring, scheduling, and compensation for job postings are handled directly between the employer and candidate.

Eligibility to access the career board as a potential employer or employee lasts from the time of ticket purchase for that year’s conference until tickets for the following year’s conference go on sale (usually around October, six months before the conference). For the 2023 conference, access starts from the time the job board is launched in November 2022 until tickets go on sale for the 2023 conference.

For Candidates:

By submitting your resume to the 2023 MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference resume database (the “Database“), the organizers of the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference (the “Organizers“) and certain employers (the “Participating Employers“) will have access to information about you and your interest in employment opportunities.

You may choose to limit the amount of personal information in your resume, and the Organizers encourage you to do so. Personal information includes your name, address, telephone number, and/or email address (“Personal Information“). We suggest that applicants include name and email addresses only. Under no circumstances should you include sensitive information, such as your social security number, passport identification number, or drivers’ license number.

If you choose to include Personal Information in your resume, both the Organizers and the Participating Employers will have access to such Personal Information and may use this information to contact you directly about employment opportunities. If you have questions or concerns about the use of your Personal Information by a Participating Employer, you should review the privacy policy for such Participating Employer, as neither the Organizers nor the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference are responsible for the use of your Personal Information by a Participating Employer.
