Andrew C. Thomas is Director, Data Science at SMT (SportsMEDIA Technologies), where he is working to help bring puck and player tracking technology to the NHL and beyond. He was Lead Hockey Researcher for the Minnesota Wild from 2016-2019 and has consulted for multiple MLB teams. He was a professor of Statistics and Data Science at Carnegie Mellon University from 2009-2014 and the University of Florida in 2015, during which time several of his graduated students landed jobs in analytics for major sports teams. He co-founded the hockey analytics site war-on-ice.com with his then graduate student Sam Ventura (now with the Pittsburgh Penguins) and Alexandra Mandrycky (now with NHL Seattle). He received a PhD in Statistics from Harvard University in 2009 and an SB in Physics (Course 8) from MIT in 2004. Thomas was born and raised in Toronto, Canada, and currently lives with his beagle in Durham, NC.
