Shael Brown

Undergraduate Student, Dalhousie University

Shael Brown is a fourth-year undergraduate student at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, taking an honors in mathematics and a minor in computer science. His primary area of research in academic settings has been the theory of computation. However, he is also interested in the applications of mathematical modeling to sports analytics. In his current research he models play progressions in basketball, soccer and hockey, using directed graphs and PageRank, to derive a new statistic of how “important” a player is to the flow of the game. This statistic values not only offensive and defensive skills but also playmaking ability as well.
