Jan Van Haaren is the Head of Data & Analytics at SciSports. He leads a team of soccer analytics researchers that develops analytical tools for measuring player and team performances, analyzing strategies and tactics, and understanding the decision-making behavior of players. His research interests are at the intersection of sports analytics and artificial intelligence, where he is mostly interested in applications of spatio-temporal tracking data and deep reinforcement learning.
Prior to SciSports, Jan obtained a Ph.D. in Machine Learning from KU Leuven. In addition to his fundamental machine learning research, he also worked on applications to sports data. More specifically, he developed methods for analyzing the strategies and tactics used in soccer and volleyball games, predicting the outcomes of soccer games, and simulating soccer competitions.
