Ben Baumer grew up in Northampton, before earning a bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University, a master’s degree from the University of California, San Diego, and a doctorate from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He is thrilled to be back in Northampton and teaching at Smith.
His research interests lie in discrete math and theoretical computer science, particularly analysis of algorithms, combinatorial optimization, graph theory, combinatorics, and network science.
Having worked for the New York Mets as their Statistical Analyst from 2004 to 2012, he is also an active researcher in sports analytics, particularly with respect to baseball (sabermetrics). His experience working in industry extends more broadly to the academic fields of data analysis, data visualization, and data science
