The Media Panel will discuss the impact of media consolidation on the world of sports, from the evolution of reporting to media buying, advertising, marketing, and blogging to the advent of sports networks and TV sports packages.

Bill Bridgen - Executive Vice President and General Manager, Comcast SportsNet New England


Matt Chmura is in his second season with the Boston Bruins, and his first as the team's Director of Communications, following one season as the club's Director of Media Relations. In this capacity, he is responsible for the Bruins' overall communications functions and strategies, while overseeing all media relations, publications and website editorial efforts.

A native of Taunton, MA, Chmura spent four seasons in the communications department of the New York based Major League Soccer team (MetroStars (2003-2005 seasons) /New York Red Bulls (2006 season)). During the 2006 season, he served as the team's Vice President of Communications where he oversaw all of the team's public relations, media relations, broadcasting and interactive media efforts.

Chmura began his sports career as an intern in the public relations departments of the New England Revolution (Major League Soccer), the Tennessee Titans (National Football League) and the New England Patriots (National Football League). He also completed a marketing internship with the Patriots.

Matthew is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross with a BA in Political Science. Following his graduation, Chmura was named to a two-year term on the College's Board of Trustees. Currently he is active on Holy Cross' Alumni Marketing Council and also mentors Holy Cross students who are interested in the sports industry.

In addition to his professional activities, Chmura is active in non-profit work, as he currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Taunton Boys and Girls Club and is a volunteer at Children's Hospital Boston.

Chmura is single and resides in Boston.


Mark Fainaru-Wada is an investigative reporter for ESPN. Prior to that, he worked in the same capacity on the San Francisco Chronicle’s enterprise team.

For The Chronicle, Fainaru-Wada and colleague Lance Williams began working on the BALCO steroids case in Sept. 2003. Since then, their investigative work has earned them a string of national honors, including the George Polk, Edgar A. Poe, Dick Schaap Excellence in Journalism and Associated Press Sports Editors awards.

In March 2006, Fainaru-Wada and Williams published “Game of Shadows: Barry Bonds, BALCO, and the Steroids Scandal That Rocked Professional Sports.” (Gotham Books). The book became an immediate New York Times best-seller and prompted Major League Baseball to launch an investigation into steroid use in its sport.

In May 2006, Fainaru-Wada and Williams were issued subpoenas to testify before a grand jury investigating the source(s) of some of the information they published in The Chronicle and their book. The reporters vowed not to reveal their sources and were appealing their sentence of up to 18 months in prison when the government dropped the subpoenas in February.

Fainaru-Wada’s notable projects have included an investigation into the expanding influence of sports agents; an inside look at how scam artists use athletes to lure investors into bogus business ventures; and revealing profiles of the controversial owners of the Golden State Warriors and San Francisco 49ers.

He previously worked for the San Francisco Examiner, for which he wrote enterprise stories and covered Stanford football and men's basketball. He also was a national sportswriter for Scripps Howard News Service, covering the Masters, Wimbledon and the Final Four. He has worked at the National all-sports daily, the Los Angeles Daily News and the Knoxville (Tenn.) News-Sentinel.

Fainaru-Wada is a graduate of Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism.


Jessamy Tang - J Sports Boston owns two radio stations (890 ESPN Boston (WAMG-AM) and 1400 ESPN Lowell (WLLH-AM)) in Greater Boston that are the exclusive ESPN Radio affiliates in the Boston radio market. Jessamy Tang oversees all aspects of these ESPN radio stations including advertising sales, programming, marketing, promotions, and finance.

Prior to this position, Jessamy held several senior management positions with ESPN, Inc. and ABC Radio. During her tenure with the company, she was responsible for, developed, and oversaw ABC Radio's strategy for ESPN Radio and the transition of ESPN Radio from a syndicated programming provider to a full 24-hour, 7 day a week sports radio network and station business. Also, she was President & General Manager of ABC's radio cluster in Pittsburgh, which included an ESPN Radio station. Under Jessamy’s leadership, the station became the highest rated ESPN Radio station owned by ABC. The station earned four "Achievement in Radio Awards" and "Sports Personality of the Year" in 2001. Other accomplishments include making ESPN's first interactive television agreement and overseeing sales planning and administration for ABC Radio Networks.

She has also provided strategic media consulting services to professional sports teams, media companies, and sports leagues. She consulted to the Miami Dolphins in negotiating their broadcast & cable agreements which included domestic, international, English, Spanish, ancillary programming and play-by-play rights for radio, broadcast television, satellite television, and cable television. She also assisted Stanford Graduate School of Business in developing a custom designed executive education program for the National Football League.

Earlier in her career, Jessamy was a management consultant for Deloitte & Touche. Jessamy holds a Bachelor of Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Master in Business Administration from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business.


Kimberly Williams - After joining the NFL as Chief Financial Officer in 2003, Kim Williams was named Chief Operating Officer of NFL Network by NFL Network President & CEO Steve Bornstein in April 2006.

Williams is responsible for the day-to-day management of advertising and affiliate sales, network operations and administration, plus oversight of all financial controls and revenue.

With the NFL’s January 2006 decision to award the Thursday-Saturday primetime NFL game package to NFL Network, Williams plays a critical role in ensuring its success.

Prior to her current position, Williams served as Senior Vice President, Finance for the NFL, helping in the initial launch of NFL Network and responsible for the League’s overall financial activities including financial reporting and analysis, financial routines and controls, and long-range strategic planning.

Preceding her time at the NFL, Williams served as Senior Vice President & Chief Financial Officer for NBC West Coast, where she reported to then NBC Entertainment President Jeff Zucker. In that role, Williams worked at NBC’s Burbank, Calif., offices and was responsible for all financial aspects of NBC West Coast operations, including NBC’s Entertainment, Studios & Enterprises divisions.

Williams also worked in New York as the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for NBC Business Development. In this capacity, Williams oversaw activities including acquisition/divestiture analyses, investment portfolio management, and derivative/hedging strategies.

In all, Williams spent more than a decade with General Electric (GE) owned companies, including stays at Nuovo Pignone (GE Power Systems) in Florence, Italy, and GE International, Power Controls and GE Capital in London, England.

Williams holds a BA degree from Connecticut College in Japanese and Asian studies. She also has a Masters degree in international business administration from the American Graduate School of International Management (“Thunderbird”).


 MODERATOR

Shira Springer is a national investigative/enterprise sportswriter for the Boston Globe, where she has worked for more than a decade. She covered the Boston Celtics as a beat writer for nearly eight years. Her coverage of the Celtics, the NBA, as well as the larger sports world has earned awards from the Associated Press Sports Editors for investigative and explanatory journalism and the Women?s Sports Foundation for feature writing. She has appeared on numerous ESPN programs, MSNBC, CNN, NESN and Comcast, providing commentary on a wide-range of sports-related topics.

Since joining the Globe in 1997, Springer also has covered the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, Revolution, NASCAR, Boston Marathon and local and national college athletics. She was honored for her coverage of former Celtic Vin Baker and his announcement that he suffered from alcoholism, as well as a three-part investigative series on the lives of Cuban athletes who have defected. Her writing also appears in the Globe Magazine and Travel section. In a magazine cover piece entitled, ?A Narrow Escape,? Springer detailed the story of her family?s escape from Nazi Germany.

Springer graduated from Harvard in 1997 with a degree in Social Studies (Political and Social Theory and Philosophy). She was a distance runner on the cross-country and track and field teams and continues her interest in the sport by running marathons. She also speaks fluent German.
