The Long Thaw: Hockey’s Embrace of Analytics

Hockey, and more specifically the NHL, has been increasingly active in the analytics space in recent years. Hockey analytics reached mainstream when the NHL partnered with SAP SE to create a statistical package that coincided with the launch of a new website featuring analytical statistics during the 2014-15 season. A relative newcomer to the sports analytics scene, there is a strong and growing contingent that is taking over at all levels of the game and pushing hockey to the next level. As the importance of data capture and utilization increases, third-party firms are popping up to develop new technologies and metrics in tandem with team’s building out quantitative player evaluation departments. This panel will explore common hockey metrics and potential new ones, how analytics is expanding both in the professional game and throughout the sport in general, and how the next phase of technology development and deployment will affect the game.
