Football is often considered the laggard when it comes to sports analytics due to limited sample size and the difficulty of isolating win impact at the player level. In recent years, however, there has been a steady shift to using analytics both on the field and in personnel decisions. We have seen these trends on the field through events like Bill Belichick going for it on 4th and 2 and Sean Payton kicking an onside kick to start the second half of the Super Bowl. Off the field, we have seen a trend towards very successful non-traditional players such as Wes Welker. This panel will explore the data-driven decisions in football with specific focus on the impact the new CBA has had on decisions and the latest trends in analyzing on the field play.
